Q&A with Leora Goldbloom-Helzner: Engineering Nanoparticles for Spinal Cord Injury Regeneration

November 16, 2023

PhRMA Foundation awardee Leora Goldbloom-Helzner is engineering small nanoparticles to deliver regenerative treatment to spinal cord injury sites.

Spinal cord injuries cause tissue damage and, depending on injury severity, irreversible paralysis. Most current therapies fail to stop injury progression or provide sustained regeneration at the injury site.

Leora Goldbloom-Helzner, a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, received a 2023 PhRMA Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship in Drug Delivery for her work using small nanoparticles to deliver regenerative treatment to spinal cord injury sites. Her project aims to engineer nanoparticles that target the spinal cord to improve the delivery and long-term retention of therapeutics in the body, ultimately preventing irreparable damage to the spinal cord.
