Q&A with Dr. Surachat Ngorsuraches: Incorporating Equity Into Health Care Value Assessment

November 20, 2023

Dr. Surachat Ngorsuraches is exploring methods for capturing patient preferences on the value of health care while also incorporating equity considerations.

When assessing patient preferences on the value of health care, many studies fail to consider equity concerns as a factor that may influence patients. For instance, would a patient value a treatment differently if they knew it would benefit a population in greater need?

Surachat Ngorsuraches, PhD, an associate professor in Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy, received a 2023 PhRMA Foundation Mid-Career Faculty Grant in Value Assessment and Health Outcomes Research for his research to exploring a value assessment method that captures patient preferences while incorporating equity considerations.

The goal is to help facilitate health care policy decisions that respect the preferences of the affected patient population while also considering the extent to which the population would be willing to trade efficiency for equity.
