Program: The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation continues its program of Faculty Development Awards in Clinical Pharmacology. Through this program, annual awards are made to medical schools for support for full-time junior faculty members in the field of human clinical pharmacology. The level of support is variable, and is aimed at keeping within the existing salary and fringe benefit structure of the applicant university. The award is for two years. Individuals at the associate professor or professor level should not apply for this award. Purpose: This program was established by the PhRMA Foundation in 1966 in recognition of the many problems involved in evaluating therapeutic agents. Drug investigation is a demanding task. As in nearly every aspect of the health field, manpower needs are acute. This program is intended to meet some of these workforce needs in the field of clinical pharmacology. The ultimate aim of the awards program is to stimulate teaching, training, and research in clinical pharmacology. It is aimed at providing an opportunity for the development of the research potential of clinical pharmacologists during the years immediately following their formal training programs. Applications, however good, which do not meet the aims of the program will be disapproved Award The level of support is variable and intended to be within the existing salary structure in the applicant university. The requested award must be within the range of prevailing salaries and fringe benefits in the primary department or unit in which the candidate shall undertake his activities. Prevailing salaries are defined to be the current levels paid by the university to individuals at the junior faculty level with experience and training equivalent to that of the candidate and who are performing similar services. Up to 8% of the funds may be used for indirect costs. Please note that Foundation support for salary and fringe benefits will not exceed $120,000 per year. The Foundation award does not preclude supplementation by the university. Where the candidate's salary and fringe benefits exceed $120,000 per year, the application must state the full amount of each to be received by the candidate during the two years of the award. Since the requested award level is examined in the total review given each application, the Foundation reserves the right to request additional information. NOTE: Faculty Development awards will begin on July 1, 2012. Eligibility Candidates sponsored by medical schools preferably should have at least two year's training at the residency level, and two years' clinical experience in a research training program related to clinical pharmacology. Candidates should be those who clearly wish a full-time career in human clinical pharmacology. This is an important factor in the selection process. Facilities for research and training must be available to the candidate and the program with which he/she is associated must have a demonstrated commitment to training in clinical pharmacology, thus providing an environment where the candidate's research potential can be developed to the fullest extent possible. Before an individual is eligible to apply for a PhRMA Foundation award, he/she must first have a firm commitment from a U.S. university. Applications must be submitted by an accredited school in the United States of America, and all applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Reports
The recipient school is expected to submit an annual report on the disposition of the funds and on the progress in achieving the goals of the proposed plan outlined for the appointee. Payment of the award will be made quarterly each year. These awards are made to the institution on behalf of the individual. Any change in the relationship between the institution and the individual must be brought to the attention of the Foundation, at which time a review of the situation will be made. Termination Circumstances may arise under which the school or the appointee may wish to terminate the award before its completion. This may be arranged at any time by agreement between the school and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation. Termination will be made with the understanding that all unexpended funds will be returned to the PhRMA Foundation and that any unpaid balance of the award will be canceled. The funding for this award is not transferable. Ethical Considerations The Scientific Advisory Committee as well as the program advisory committees of the PhRMA Foundation are sensitive to the appropriate use of experimental subjects, animals and humans, in research. In their deliberations, they consider all aspects of a proposal and may deny support for many reasons. Careful consideration is given to humane use and care of animal subjects. For human and animal research, the project review committee requires, in writing, adherence to prevailing standards of ethical research practices, including Institutional Review Board approval before initiation of any research projects. In addition, for human research, assurance of informed consent will be required. Selection Selection of the recipients of the awards will be made by the Board of Directors of the PhRMA Foundation based upon the recommendations of the Clinical Pharmacology Advisory Committee: Profiling: PhRMA Foundation does not monitor or collect the content viewed on the site by unique individuals for the purpose of creating user profiles. Application Information Applications for a Faculty Development Award are to be submitted online in late 2011. An exact deadline date for these applications will be announced in early 2011.Please note that applications will not be accepted after the deadline date.
Submit your information online by following the steps in the registration process. 1. Registration Information will include basic contact information as well as information on your citizenship. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. Applications must be submitted by an accredited U.S. school. 2. An Extended Letter which includes all of the following information. (a) Candidate Name, Personal Data, Education and Training, Experience in Research and Teaching-- complete Curriculum Vitae, a Bibliography for the Chiefs of Staff under whom the candidate has served . (b) Position (1) Proposed faculty rank. (2) The school's thoughts for support of the position following expiration of the award. (3) Department of the school in which the candidate is or will be established and his affiliation with any other departments (4) While the program anticipates that the candidate may have teaching responsibilities, the program has as a primary focus the extension of the candidate's research skills. Please list the distribution of time to be spent by the candidate in teaching, patient care and research. Include some appraisal of the impact of the time allotted for patient care commitments on the time allotted for research. It is expected that the awardee be guaranteed at least 50% protected time for research. (5) List the amount of the candidate's current grant support, source and length of time grant will continue. If no support, please note this. 3. Plan — Please limit to 15 pages (a) Complete and concise statement of the school's plan for the activities of the candidate in the next two years, in relationship to the area of clinical pharmacology. The plan may include further research training either in the candidate's own school or at another institution. The sponsoring institution should have a commitment to developing a program in clinical pharmacology and be able to demonstrate the ability to provide clinical pharmacology training in the future. Where the candidate will be involved in multiple research projects, indicate which projects will receive primary emphasis. Details on the proposed research must be provided to give information on the aims, methods and procedures to be used, significance of research, etc. (b) If the candidate will have responsibilities in more than the sponsoring department during the award period, please include a letter from the chairman of each of these departments covering the candidate's intended activities. (c) Description of the facilities for research and training which will be made available to the candidate. (d) A statement from the candidate on the extent of his commitment to clinical pharmacology and the role this program can have in his career development must be submitted.
