PhRMA Foundation Announces 2010/2011 Award Recipients for The Faculty Development Award in Clinical Pharmacology
Washington, D.C. (May 1, 2010) - The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Foundation has announced the recipients of its Faculty Development Award in Clinical Pharmacology.  The award is part of a program developed by the Foundation to encourage clinical pharmacology teaching, training, and research.
Sarah A. Holstein, M.D., Ph.D. of The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Timothy J. Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. of The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine will each receive $240,000 over a two-year period.
The award was established in 1966 to facilitate clinical pharmacology research and meet a growing demand for qualified drug investigators. In the years following formal training, supporting the research of clinical pharmacologists is crucial to career retention.  Adequate funding provides opportunities for young investigators to realize their potential in the field and pursue research important to the discipline.
Clinical Pharmacology Advisory Committee member Art Atkinson, M.D. highlighted the award's substantial benefits. "It will provide recipients with adequate protected time for career development in clinical pharmacology research and training programs," he said.
Award recipients are selected by the Foundation's Board of Directors based on the recommendations of the Clinical Pharmacology Advisory Committee.  Eligible candidates will have at least two years of residency training and two years of experience in a clinical pharmacology research program.  Only full-time junior faculty members in the field of human clinical pharmacology will be considered.
The Foundation will offer the Faculty Development Award again and application information will be available in early 2011.
For 44 years, the PhRMA Foundation has supported the field of drug discovery and the careers of scientific investigators, faculty members, and physicians.  By funding the research of thousands of young scientists, the Foundation has helped pave the way for the future of pharmaceutical care.
