Application Information

Applications for a postdoctoral fellowship award should be submitted online by October 1, 2008. Please note that no applications will be accepted after the deadline date. Identification of the successful applicants will be made no later than December 15, 2008.

The following information must be supplied.

1. Registration Information. Submit your information online by following the steps in the registration process.

2. An Extended Letter. This must include, by category, all of the following information.

(a) Applicant
Name, Citizenship/Permanent Residency, Education and Training -- Curriculum Vitae, Current Sources of Support for Either Training or Research, Training or Research Faculty Under Whom Candidate has Served, Bibliography, Research Interest and Future Aims.

(b) Sponsor
Copy of mentor's curriculum vitae, including education and training, experience in research, past and current research support, and bibliography submitted on NIH format/ PHS 398. Please limit this to no more than 3 pages. Description of the training and research facilities that will be available to the candidate and a letter indicating approval of the candidate's plan for education and training in pharmaceutics research.

(c) Position
Department(s) of the institution in which the position and training will be established and the nature of collaborative agreements with other departments participating in the education and training activities. This includes identification of other individuals with whom the applicant will be directly involved and in what fashion. Date on which the position described will be started

[NOTE: Awards may be activated beginning January1, 2008 or on the first day of any month thereafter, up to and including December 1, 2008].

(d) Plan
The candidate must prepare a comprehensive statement not to exceed eight single-spaced typewritten pages of 12 point or larger, of the plans for research education and training in pharmaceutics. Applicants are requested to use a format similar to that specified for the submission of grants to the National Institutes of Health that includes a description of the objective(s), rationale, methods of approach and a bibliography of major references. Preliminary results, if any, should also be included.

The Pharmaceutics Advisory Committee, which reviews each application, places considerable emphasis on the quality of the research and training proposal. In describing the research and training plan, it is also essential to document that proper guidance will be available to insure training in the techniques and principles of the area. In this regard, if the plan calls for the candidate's involvement in a number of departments, the proposed plan must have the approval of all the departments in which the candidate will train. Letters stating this approval from the chairs of these departments must be included in the application.

3. References

Two letters of recommendation from those closely associated with the candidate during his/her scientific career are required. These should be sent directly to the Foundation. When possible, these letters should be from individuals not in the institution sponsoring the candidate. Also, letters of recommendation from the Chair of each sponsoring department must accompany the application. The Chair's letter should specifically answer the following questions: (a) what plans are made for training the candidate, albeit informally, in the given discipline; (b) how the candidate's research plan fits into the ongoing research of the sponsoring department(s); and (c) assurance that funds are available to carry out the intended research.

4. Copies (PDF or Word doc.) or appropriate web link of each article published or ready for publication by the candidate that have a bearing on the intended research or the individual's prior accomplishments should accompany the application. Scanned photocopies of articles furnished to the PhRMA Foundation in fulfillment of this requirement must be in compliance with U.S. copyright law.
